War's Crucible

Welcome!

War's Crucible is a competitive 1v1 strategy game set in the musket age. Players command persistent armies through courier-delivered orders, drawn battle maps, and written commands interpreted by integrated light language AI models. Every decision carries weight: troops survive across campaigns, supplies determine strategy, and battlefield plans must adapt to the friction of war.

Concept

Historicity

War's crucible was born from the desire to have a game that reflects real life warfare with the strategies, tactics, logistics and stratagems that generals in the past have used to win. The weight of having a persistent army also builds pressure consequence, all mixing to create a realistic and historically grounded strategy game with all the friction and creativity of real warfare.

Creativity

Warfare is full of examples of creative planning and pressure off the battlefield that hasn't been replicated in a game before. Books dedicated to military strategy will become manuals, and historic engagements will become examples on the friction and adaptability of war.

Emotional weighting

RTS games usually treat NPCs as a expendable forces thrown away without any consequence, but War's Crucible encourages proper usage of troops, with soldiers, staff and officer naturally becoming more competent as they survive more and more campaigns. Or the player can send them all to their death, and with enough renowned gained through winning battles, a lot of the troops will march to their doom at their generals' orders. Persistent troops exist outside of the battles, with the camp swelling or constricting based on the amount in the general's war chest. Bring them all to battle and have them killed, there will be no more camp, bring too many without the correct provisions, the army might starve or run out of ammunition before the first engagement, bring the right amount and win, you could double your force through flipping captured soldiers or stealing the enemies supplies to provide a wage for more.

Long-term vs short term warfare

Most battles are won before the first shot is fired. War's crucible encourages payers to order their armies in power positions around the map, cut off enemy supply lines to pilfer their provisions, or isolating the enemy to engage in smaller conflicts with greater chances of success. Clausewitz says "If one side seeks battle, the other must do so too, unless he has a definite reason to the contrary." This is a question that War's Crucible gameplay always puts to the player.

Command

Communicating to troops about manoeuvres, positioning, formations, and battle plans is completely aligned to the historic limitations that pre-radio communication had. Commands are not telepathically communicated like in a lot of modern RTS games, instead battle plans are physically drawn with contingencies and reactions attached to the generals' flags or horns, allowing for a layer of communication to manipulate forces. Furthermore, if a specific movement or action is required for a division to do at a certain signal, then a written letter is able to be sent via courier, out AI system is able to take these written notes and convert them into actionable manoeuvres or actions, just write them well, or troops might misread the letters.

Fog of war

Generals were not omnipotent. If they could not see the enemy, or have scouts relay information, then they did not know where they were. Only troops that the payers army can see are actually in the game, allowing players to emulate real life troop concealment for ambushes of battle planning, like The battle of lake Tresimene, or Cannae, or most of Hannibal's battles in the second Punic war.

Redrilling

Troops are able to be redrilled to act in specific ways to specific stimuli, in the Generals tent the general can set up troop behaviours, the more audacious, the more experienced troops will be required. This allows for tight planning and creativity in campaigns and highlights the importance of troop allocation ad positioning.

Grant funding applied for!

The first application window for Epic game mega grant program has opened and we are applying to it with our game. Attaining this grant will allow us to access resources that will make the game deliver the historic fidelity we want.

Full diegetic menu design almost complete

The decision to make the game use a diegetic menu comes from the desire to want all of our players to feel as immersed in the game as much as we can. Essentially making a competitive 1v1 game feel like a roleplaying game. The General's tent will be the hub for all interaction and work as the war room for future strategy planning and provision management. Follow for more updates!
